Greensleeves (with a twist). When we first started to compose this set of variations on the theme of Greensleeves (one of our first forays into composing for violin & cello duo), we didn't expect it to become one of our favorite recital pieces. Originally inspired by Greensleeves on a ground, it became an epic dialogue between violin and cello, showcasing different aspects of each instrument and giving them a chance to shine. And even better, whether the listeners are classical music veterans or dedicated film score lovers, this is an all around crowd pleaser.
In addition to being one of our first composition collaborations, it was also one of the first times we tried to film in an outdoor setting (IT WAS FREEZING 😅). We film all of our videos with just the two of us, and let's be real, it's been a real test of our relationship.😉 Lesson #1: don't forget the snacks. You're going to need them!
Being total beginners in the filming world, it probably would have been good to start small, but small isn't in our vocabulary. Dream big or GO HOME! What could possibly go wrong!? Well, everything from the freezing temps to learning how to film in the dark was a challenge. Trying to get a shot before it got completely dark meant tiny filming windows - sometimes only 15 minutes. You don't realize how fast minutes go by when your frozen fingers have trouble clicking the "record" button. And don't get us started on cars driving by!
All jokes and difficulties aside, we loved making this video, and it was the start of realizing how bad we were at it. We flatter ourselves that we've improved a bit since our Greensleeves days, but you can be the judge. Watch our more recent video, Simple Gifts.
